THE SMOKING PENINSULA
On this tour of the Reykjanes Peninsula, you will uncover the striking secrets and geological wonders hidden throughout this desolate volcanic region. Located in the southwest corner of Iceland, the landscapes of this peninsula have been scarred from an age of volcanic activity, thanks to the Eurasian and North American continental tectonic plates tearing apart right through the peninsula. Resulting in one of the most dramatic and alien-like areas of Iceland, we will explore vast lava fields, ancient craters, mineral lakes and bubbling geothermal areas, before visiting windswept fishing villages strung along the rocky coastline as well as lighthouses that guard lonely stretches of volcanic cliffs that teem with birdlife during the summer months.
Optional extras that can be added to the tour include touring a geothermal powerplant in the region or visiting the Icelandic Saltfish Museum in the small fishing hamlet of Grindavík. Contact us for some recommendations if you’re interested in turning your tour into a full day trip, or if you’d like to combine it with an airport transfer.
As with all our tours, we focus on environmentally friendly travel. This means small tour groups, travelling the lesser known roads to our destinations, and surprise stops at some hidden gems along the way!
